My thoughts: I feel that John Lingan hit some strong point when he wrote about the unusual style and diction Diaz used, and can agree that the untranslated Spanish and "rapid-fire mixture of geeky culture references and urban slang" didn't degrade him as a writer, but proved his versatility in literature.

I too felt the "brutality, torture, rape, murder, and suicide" was extreme yet it added to the value of the story told instead of blurring it with adulterated action.
